Maui's Public Schools

See a list of public schools

Public schools in Hawaii have been widely reported as failing to meet a wide variety of standards. Furthermore, many people have misgivings about ethnic tensions.

At the elementary level, a number of Maui schools receive good grades and parent recommendations. Haiku School has a very successful program of community-based management and parents give the teachers high marks for teaching skills. Students from Kula School and Pukalani Elementary regularly score among the top schools in the state on standardized tests.

Nevertheless, a high percentage of students attend classes in temporary buildings and the teacher/student ratios are high. Quite often new arrivals will talk to real estate agents, employers and friends about individual schools and make home buying decisions based on reports about the better schools.

High schools range from outstanding programs to mediocre. Baldwin High School, for example, has excellent programs in the arts. Baldwin students regularly receive honors and scholarships to mainland colleges. Maui High also has some strong programs as does the new Upcountry high school, King Kekaulike.

It is very important to visit each school and talk to the administrators, teachers, students and parents. These visits will help you make a decision about exactly where to buy a home.
